Science Fair Project Ideas

Kindergarten Science Fair Projects

Kids can discover the wonders of science as young as kindergarten. At this age, your child will be able to observe colors, sights, sounds, tastes, and touch. Use your imagination to find your child's interest.

Science Is Everywhere

A trip to the zoo can teach your child that bears have fur and snakes have scales. A trip to the backyard can uncover a fascinating world of worms, insects, plants, and various animals. Catch a worm and a frog and see if your child can describe the different appearances of each one. Take your child to the local animal shelter and show him how many kinds of dogs and cats there are. Watch out though, you may just come home with a new pet!

Although your child may be able to see the differences between animals or plants, he probably will not understand the reasons behind those differences. Concepts like habitat, adaptation, and survival mechanisms will not be introduced until your child is further along in his education. Keep the lessons simple and fun for your child at this age.

Science Fair Projects Should Be Fun

The library can be a great place to uncover new and interesting science fair project ideas. Try to pick books with lots of pictures that will illustrate the differences between animals and plants. Your kindergartner will be learning how to recognize that most things are made up of parts. Find a model of a plant or animal that can demonstrate this lesson. Above all have fun!

Science Stores

Science stores are also a great resource. You never know what learning tools you will find in these stores. Most products are made to demonstrate some scientific phenomenon, so use this to your advantage.

The Wonders Of Weather

Your child will most likely be taught to identify weather conditions like hot, cold, snowy, and rainy. A trip to the mountains to discover snow, or a trip to the coast to discover fog will help your child see the wonders of weather firsthand. Associate clothing choices with various types of weather. You can also discover rocks, pebbles, and sand as different materials of the earth. Classify objects as natural or manmade. For instance, the ocean is natural, but the pier is manmade.

Have fun with your child and recognize the amazement in his eyes. When you see that your child is especially interested in a certain topic, use it as a learning tool. Give suggestions for science projects that are related to the topic of interest. Your student will learn to appreciate science from a young age.
